Tyne Bridge up look

As the Tyne Bridge (opened in 1928) is crossed, if you look upwards, you see a mass of girders, rivets and the angles of its structure. An amazing zig-zag of design, built for strength by Dorman Long - the same firm that built the Sydney Harbour Bridge (opened in 1932).

At the head of Grey's Street, in Newcastle upon Tyne, is Grey's Monument. A spiral staircase within screws round to the top and a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding area is your prize for climbing the stairs.

In Newcastle's Grainger Market is the first M&S shop opened in 1895. It is still running and is called "M&S Original Penny Bazaar". M&S was originally founded in 1884 in Leeds.

The Chinatown in Newcastle is a district of Newcastle upon Tyne, located to the west of the city on the edge of the shopping and commercial centre, mostly along Stowell Street. It is one of only five Chinatowns in England, with the other four being in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. (Wikipedia)

A view from the top of Grey's Monument at the head of Grey Sreet in Newcastle. The Metro Bridge can be seen crossing the Tyne, The Cathedral, St. Nicks., is covered in scaffolding, The Theatre Royal can be seen and the development of Gateshead is visible. Taken in 1990 with a little Olympus.

QE II last visit to NuT

In 2008 the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2 was taken out of service. On it's last days of service it visited many ports that were previously used as embarkation points. Here is a shot of her at Newcastle upon Tyne. She was on her way to become a floating hotel in Dubai, where she rests at anchor today.

Tyneside High Level Bridge

The High Level Bridge carries the railway on the top level with a roadway below. The road is not used for vehicles now. There is a pavement to each side to look down at the River Tyne, Gateshead and Newcastle
